Rockpile Mountain Wilderness

Rockpile Mountain Wilderness is a 4,281-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Missouri, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited, making it a place for foot-traffic exploration and genuine solitude.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. Visitors should expect a genuine backcountry setting without roads, developed facilities, or the sounds of motors. This is a place to disconnect and practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp below timberline if applicable, and respect the landscape's protected status.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and entering on foot. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions for travel, though seasons in Missouri can be wet and muddy. Winter conditions vary year to year; snow and ice are possible but not guaranteed. Come prepared for primitive conditions, minimal signage, and the responsibility that comes with wilderness travel.
