About Powderhorn Wilderness Area
Powderhorn Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 48,000 acres of pristine high-country terrain in Colorado's Gunnison National Forest region, offering backpackers and hikers an exceptional alpine experience with minimal crowding. The wilderness features dramatic peaks, subalpine meadows, and clear mountain streams set against the rugged Elk Mountains backdrop. Access is primarily via trailheads on the western and southern boundaries, with trails ascending through diverse ecosystems from aspen groves to windswept alpine tundra above 12,000 feet. This remote landscape rewards prepared wilderness travelers with solitude, excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including elk and marmots, and pristine backcountry camping beneath star-filled skies far from developed areas.
