About Panther Den Wilderness

Panther Den Wilderness is an 824-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where motorized travel, mechanical devices, and maintained roads are prohibited. Visitors should expect rugged terrain suited to foot travel and a genuine backcountry experience defined by solitude and Leave No Trace principles.

Access is on foot only, and the area operates under strict wilderness regulations. Plan to be entirely self-sufficient; facilities are minimal to nonexistent. Spring through fall are the most practical seasons for visiting, though winter conditions can make travel difficult. Come prepared for a true wilderness experience where you'll encounter few if any other people.
