Hellsgate Wilderness

Hellsgate Wilderness is a 37,457-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and non-motorized travel through undeveloped country.

As a designated Wilderness, Hellsgate operates under strict rules: no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles and travel on foot or horseback only. The landscape is rugged and remote, with limited maintained infrastructure—this is true backcountry, not a day-hike destination.

Access and seasonality depend on weather and trailhead conditions. Spring and fall typically offer the most reliable conditions, though summer is also feasible. Winter can bring snow and hazardous conditions at higher elevations. Plan ahead: water sources may be scarce, and self-sufficiency is essential. A permit or registration may be required—check with the managing Forest Service office before your trip.
