Hells Canyon Wilderness

Hells Canyon Wilderness spans over 217,000 acres of remote backcountry in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service as a federally protected Wilderness Area. Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted within its boundaries.

Visiting means committing to Leave No Trace principles and self-sufficiency. Access points exist around the perimeter, but expect rough terrain, limited water sources in some areas, and a true backcountry experience. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when snow has cleared and weather is most stable. Winter and early spring present serious hazards and limited accessibility.
