Nezperce National Forest

Nez Perce National Forest spans nearly 728,000 acres across central Idaho, offering a vast landscape of mixed-use public land managed by the Forest Service. The forest supports a full range of outdoor recreation: hiking and backpacking on an extensive trail network, dispersed camping throughout the forest, fishing in streams and lakes, scenic driving on forest roads, and hunting during designated seasons. Winter brings snowshoe and cross-country ski opportunities in higher elevations.

Access is generally good via major forest roads, though many secondary routes are rough or seasonal. The best time to visit is mid-summer through early fall, when high passes and alpine areas are snow-free and weather is stable. Spring and early summer can still be muddy at lower elevations and snow-blocked at higher ones. Winters are substantial—expect heavy snow and road closures at elevation from December through March. Plan for self-sufficiency when dispersed camping, and check current forest conditions and fire restrictions before heading out.
