Garden Of The Gods Wilderness

Garden of the Gods Wilderness is a 3,978-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. The area offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hiking and backpacking, where visitors can experience solitude away from developed infrastructure. As a designated Wilderness, the area prohibits motorized vehicles, mechanized travel, and road access—visitors must travel on foot. This means no mountain bikes, no ATVs, and no developed facilities; the landscape remains wild and undeveloped. If you visit, you're responsible for Leave No Trace practices: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the land's protection status. Access is non-motorized only, so plan accordingly. Spring through fall is the practical visiting window, though weather and water conditions vary by season.
