Fossil Springs Wilderness

Fossil Springs Wilderness is a 10,431-acre federally protected wilderness area in Arizona managed by the Forest Service. The area offers primitive backcountry hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

As a designated Wilderness, Fossil Springs operates under strict management rules: no roads, no motorized vehicles, and no mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors must travel on foot and adhere to Leave No Trace principles—pack out everything you pack in, camp in designated areas where permitted, and respect the wilderness character that makes the area special. The landscape is rugged backcountry terrain suited to experienced hikers and backpackers willing to navigate unmarked or lightly maintained routes.

Access and timing depend on season and weather. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions, though summer is also viable for those prepared for heat. Winter can bring snow and hazardous conditions at higher elevations. Plan ahead, check current conditions with the Forest Service, and be ready for the self-sufficient demands of true wilderness travel.
