Escudilla Wilderness

Escudilla Wilderness is a 5,158-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. The area offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and a non-motorized experience away from roads and developed infrastructure.

Visitors should understand that Wilderness designation means no motorized vehicles, no mechanized travel (including mountain bikes), and no roads cut through the area. This is true backcountry — you travel on foot or horseback only. The Forest Service enforces Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and minimize your impact on the landscape.

Access is typically from trailheads on adjacent Forest Service lands. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures; summer brings heat, while winter snow and cold can limit passage. Plan accordingly for season and come prepared for self-sufficiency — water sources and resupply points are backcountry realities, not amenities.
