Cohutta Wilderness

Cohutta Wilderness is a 37,038-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Georgia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude away from roads and development. All mechanized travel and motors are prohibited—you'll navigate on foot or horseback only, moving through the area under Leave No Trace principles. Access is limited to trailheads on the periphery, with no internal roads or facilities. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions, though weather in winter can make travel difficult. This is genuine backcountry: come prepared with map and compass, self-sufficient gear, and the knowledge that help is far away.
