About Clear Springs Wilderness

Clear Springs Wilderness is a 4,739-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. As a designated Wilderness, it is primitive backcountry where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—only foot traffic and non-motorized use are allowed.

The area offers hiking and backpacking for visitors seeking solitude and an undeveloped natural experience. A Leave No Trace ethic is essential here; you are responsible for packing out what you pack in and minimizing your footprint. There are no developed facilities or maintained infrastructure within the Wilderness.

Access and seasonal conditions depend on regional weather and trail conditions; plan accordingly for the season you intend to visit. This is a genuine Wilderness—come prepared for self-reliance, route-finding, and isolation.
