About Agua Tibia Wilderness

Agua Tibia Wilderness is a 17,470-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers remote backcountry terrain suited to foot travel and self-reliant exploration, with opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and wilderness solitude away from developed facilities and motorized access.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Agua Tibia operates under strict protection rules: no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must travel on foot and practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out all waste, camp only in dispersed sites, and leave no trace of your passage. This is genuine backcountry, not a day-hike park; plan accordingly with proper gear, water, and navigation skills.

Access and seasonal timing depend on weather and water availability in the region. Spring through fall is the primary visiting window. Contact the managing Forest Service office for current conditions, water sources, trail status, and any permit or quota requirements before you go.
