About Scenic Byway 12
Scenic Byway 12 is a 122.7-mile road across southern Utah that holds three designations: All-American Road, National Forest Scenic Byway and Utah State Scenic Byway. Part of the route crosses national forest land. The drive links a string of small towns, passing through Bryce Canyon City, Tropic, Cannonville, Henrieville, Escalante and Boulder before reaching Torrey. Those communities make natural places to break up a trip of this length. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best fit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Panguitch run about 69°F highs and 31°F lows in May and around 77°F highs and 35°F lows in September, while winter brings highs near 39°F and occasional snow days. Trailheads and campgrounds sit right alongside the road. Long Neck Trail and Cat Creek Trail are within about a tenth of a mile. Red Canyon Campground and Oak Creek Campground are similarly close for anyone planning an overnight stop.
