James Canyon is a 2.8-mile out-and-back hike in the Price Ranger District of Manti-La Sal National Forest in southeastern Utah. The trail rises from 8,747 feet to 9,618 feet, giving a one-way gain of 852 feet, and it is rated hard. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail has a natural surface. Bikes are allowed, so it works for hikers and riders alike. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station at Scofield-Skyline Mine records typical July averages of 74°F for highs and 48°F for lows. That station sits roughly 900 feet below the canyon's high point, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. The open season runs from June 1 to October 15. Flat Canyon Campground and Flat Canyon Cg - Boulger Res are both about 2.8 miles away, and Sawmill Canyon and Cleveland Reservoir are within about 5 miles.
