The Umatilla Rim Trail is a cross-country skiing route in Oregon's Umatilla National Forest, within the Walla Walla Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is an out-and-back that covers about 4.2 miles with a total elevation gain of 289 feet. The route starts at a low point of about 4,929 feet and climbs to a high of about 5,231 feet, with the steepest stretch at about 0.18 miles in, where the grade reaches 11 percent. Winter is the natural season for this trail. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Meacham, Oregon, show January highs around 37°F with lows near 21°F, while July and August highs reach about 79°F. That station sits roughly 1,500 feet below the trail, so temperatures on the rim run cooler. Woodland Campground is about a mile away, and the Bobcat cross-country ski area is about 1.1 miles off. Paddlers can reach the North Fork Umatilla River about 3.2 miles away, and the Grouse Mountain Trail is about 6.2 miles away.
