About Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Oregon
Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Oregon is a 345.7-mile All-American Road that carries drivers the length of the Oregon coast, from Gearhart and Seaside in the north to Brookings and Harbor near the southern end. Along with its All-American Road status, it is designated both a National Forest Scenic Byway and an Oregon State Scenic Byway, and part of the route passes through national forest land. The drive links a long chain of coastal communities, among them Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport, Yachats, Florence, Reedsport, Coos Bay, Bandon, Port Orford and Gold Beach. Towns come frequently, so the route breaks easily into shorter sections over several days or a single long stretch between larger stops such as Newport and Florence. Summer is the most settled time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Astoria airport weather station show July and August highs around 67 to 69°F, with only eight or nine wet days a month. Winter brings highs near 49°F and about 22 wet days in December and January. Plenty of trails and camps sit right along the road. The Oregon Coast Trail and the Arch Cape to Cape Falcon Trail are both within a short distance, and Tillicum Beach and Tahkenitch Campground offer places to stay on the central coast.
