Coyote Loop is a 22.7-mile out-and-back hike in the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District of Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail rises from about 4,000 feet to a high point of 5,506 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,851 feet over the course of the trip. The climb is rolling, and the steepest stretch comes around mile 9.6, where the grade reaches about 11 percent. The route is rated hard, and the trail surface is natural. Bikes and horses are both allowed, so the loop works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Sunriver, which sits about 1,300 feet lower, show July highs around 84°F with lows near 41°F. At the higher elevation of the trail, temperatures run cooler. The trip takes about 8.5 hours, and the trail is open year-round. Arnold Ice Cave and Swamp Wells Trail Number 61 both lie about 0.4 miles away, and Bessie Butte Trail is about 2.2 miles off. Climbers can find the Central Oregon climbing area roughly 3.8 miles away.
