North Fork John Day Campground lies along the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River, at the junction of the Blue Mountain and Elkhorn Scenic Byways in northeastern Oregon. It's on the North Fork John Day Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest, managed by the Forest Service, and it sits within the North Fork John Day Wilderness. The campground has 20 campsites, three accessible toilet facilities and stock handling facilities. There is no potable water or garbage service, so visitors must pack in and pack out. It serves as the eastern access point to the North Fork John Day Wilderness via North Fork John Day River Trail #3022. The area offers hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, sightseeing and photography, and in spring and fall you can watch salmon spawning. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 83°F in July and August, with only four or five wet days a month. Winter brings lows near 15°F in January. Because that station sits roughly 1,000 feet below the campground, expect temperatures here to run cooler. Paddlers can put in on the North Fork John Day River, about 0.6 mile away, and Granite Creek is about 5.6 miles off. For more time on foot or in the saddle, Peavy Cabin and the Crawfish Lake Trail are both about 8.6 miles away.
