Elk Creek Campground is a Forest Service site in the Prairie City Ranger District of Oregon's Malheur National Forest. The site is simple: vault toilets are the only amenity, and no fees are required to use it. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 83°F in July and August, with only about four or five wet days a month. Winter is cold, with January highs near 34°F and lows around 15°F. Short Creek Guard Station is about 1.4 miles away, and North Fork Malheur Campground is about 2.5 miles away. Elk Flat Trail and Little Malheur Trail #366 are both within about five miles.
