Dougherty Campground is a Forest Service site in an open pine forest and grassland near the northern edge of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in northeastern Oregon. It sits close to the recreation area's boundary, and its setting makes it a base for camping, picnicking and berry picking, with summer and fall hunting season the main times to visit. The campground has 4 tent/trailer sites and 8 tent-only sites. Vault toilets are the only facility on site, and a fee is charged for stays. Summer and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Winchester, Idaho, show July and August highs around 78 to 79°F with only five to seven wet days a month, while winter highs stay in the mid-30s. That station sits about 1,200 feet lower than the campground, so temperatures here run cooler. Basin Creek Trail and Deadhorse Trail are both within about 3.5 miles, and Coyote Campground is about 4 miles away. Joseph Creek, a canoeing spot, is roughly 6.5 miles off.
