About Wichita Mountains Byway

The Wichita Mountains Byway is a 105.3-mile drive in Oklahoma that carries two designations: it is a National Scenic Byway and also an Oklahoma State Scenic Byway. The route links several small communities, including Carnegie, Mountain View, Medicine Park, Lawtonka Acres and Apache, so it works well as a long drive with stops along the way. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to make the trip. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show April highs around 72°F and October highs around 74°F, while July and August average highs near 94°F. The byway also makes a good base for short outings. Climbers will find bouldering areas like Spicy Meatball Boulder and Disco Biscuit right along the route, and hikers can head to the Elk Mountain Trail or the Jed Johnson Tower Trail, both within half a mile.
