5-Red Trail is a cross-country skiing route in Turnpike State Forest in western New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The loop is about 1.6 miles long and runs between roughly 2,131 feet and 2,266 feet in elevation, with the start at about 2,243 feet. Winter is the season for this trail. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Alfred, NY, show January highs around 32°F with lows near 12°F, and the station sits several hundred feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the route run a little cooler. The Stewart Forest Road Horse Camp is just 0.1 mile away, and the 7-Blue Trail is about a mile off. The State Route 244 Horse Camp and 9-Blue Trail are both within 2 miles.
