West Ridge

West Ridge is a climbing area in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest in New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. It sits within the wild forest's network of climbing and hiking spots, and the closest neighbor is Rods'n'Guns Wall, about half a mile away. The area has one route, Whale Ship, a trad climb rated 5.8 on the YDS scale. That makes it a single, straightforward option for a day on the rock. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from the nearby Conklingville Dam weather station run to highs around 77°F in July, with September still near 69°F. That station sits well below the ridge, so temperatures up high run cooler. Hadley Mountain Trail is under a mile away, and Spruce Mountain is about 3 miles off. Potash Cliff, a climbing area, and the Potash mountain trail (blue) are both roughly 7 miles away.
