Upstream (Upper) is an easy out-and-back hike on county land in Essex County, New York, about 0.4 miles from the town of Lake Placid. The route is short, covering less than a mile round trip, and rises about 148 feet one way with a steeper stretch near the middle of the trail. The climb starts at about 1,030 feet, reaches a high point of 1,137 feet, and then descends back to the trailhead. The steepest part comes at about 0.37 miles in, with a grade of around 13 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical July averages from a nearby weather station at Lake Placid run to highs near 74°F and lows around 54°F, though that station sits about 750 feet higher than the trail, so temperatures on the trail run warmer.
