Flume Knob Trail is a moderate out-and-back hike of about 1.3 miles in the Wilmington Wild Forest in New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The trail rises from a starting point around 2,222 feet to a high point of 2,293 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,756 feet for the round trip. The climb is steep near the beginning, with a grade of about 42 percent at 0.18 miles, and the trail is short enough to fit into a half-day of exploring the surrounding area. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Lake Placid run from highs around 70°F in June to 74°F in July, with lows in the 50s. That station sits about 400 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures up top run a little cooler. The trail is close to several other routes. Bear Den Trail, Rock Garden Trail and Ridge are each about 0.6 miles away, and Marble Mountain Trail is about 0.8 miles off. For climbers, Cloudspin Cliff is roughly 1.9 miles away.
