School Mountain Trail is a 4.15-mile hike in Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park in New York, managed by State Park and Recreation. The trail is rated easy and rises from about 900 feet to a high point of 1,207 feet, with a total elevation gain of 522 feet. It is a point-to-point route, and the climb is steepest at about 2.7 miles in, where the grade reaches 58 percent. The trail is open to both horses and bikes, so riders and equestrians can plan a trip on it. The trip takes about 1.5 hours, and the route also has a total descent of 870 feet, which makes it a little longer on the way down. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from the Stormville, NY weather station, about 9 miles away, show May highs around 72°F and September highs around 74°F, with July the warmest month at about 83°F. Perkins Trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Perkins Access Trail (Red) and Round Hill Bypass Trail are within about a mile and a half. Storm King Mountain, a climbing area, lies about 6 miles off.
