Downriver is an easy hike on Essex County Lands in New York, managed by county land, about half a mile from the trailhead. The route is roughly a mile long, with a total climb of about 350 feet and a peak of about 977 feet. The steepest part comes near the beginning, with a grade of about 14 percent, so it's worth starting carefully. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Lake Placid weather station put July highs around 74°F and lows near 54°F. That station sits nearly 900 feet higher than the trail, so temperatures on the route run warmer.
