Mavericks is a climbing area in New Mexico, about 4 miles from the town of Ute Park. It's a compact spot, with Probe 1 just half a mile away and several hikes starting within a mile, so it works well as a base for a day of climbing and walking in the same outing. The area holds 19 routes, mostly sport climbing, with a few trad routes and one boulder problem. The grades run from 5.4 up to 5.11a, with Fred's Friendly Face at 5.4 and Road Block at 5.11a as two of the standouts. Muff Diver is the boulder route, rated at 5.7+. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 73°F and September highs around 77°F, while July and August bring the most wet days. The station sits several hundred feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures at Mavericks run cooler. Hikers can reach the Cimarron River - Santa Claus Trail and the Dean Cow to Black Jacks Trail within a mile. For an overnight stay, Webster Parks Camp is about 4.6 miles away.
