Mountain Loop Trail is an easy out-and-back hike in the Silver City Ranger District of Gila National Forest in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about 3.3 miles long, with a one-way elevation gain of 255 feet, and it rises from a low point of about 6,667 feet to a high of about 6,943 feet. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Ft Bayard weather station, which sits about 840 feet lower than the trail, show October highs around 74°F with lows near 47°F, and April highs around 73°F. Summer is hot and wetter, with July and August highs in the upper 80s and about 13 wet days a month. Several other short loops sit close by. Dragon Loop Trail #718 is about 0.1 mile away, Pinon Loop about 0.2 mile, and Gomez Peak about 0.3 mile. Climbers can find New Mexico, other Southern Areas about 2.7 miles away.
