The Book of Red is a climbing area in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, within the Carson Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the area is set in the forest's higher reaches, about 7.5 miles from the town of Minden. The climbing here is a mix of sport and trad routes, with six in all. The grades run from about 5.7 to 5.12a, so there is something for climbers of different experience levels. Thin Face is a sport route at 5.11c/d, and Waiting On The River To Rise is the hardest at 5.12a. The trad options include Hand to Fist at 5.7 and Skull and Crossbones at 5.9. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Minden show May highs around 73°F and September highs around 83°F, while July and August average near 90°F. Pinyon Trail is about 5 miles away, and Faye-Luther Canyon is about 6.5 miles off. For a different outing, the West Fork Carson River offers canoeing at about 9 miles, and Indian Creek Campground (CA) sits at about 10 miles.
