South Sixmile Canyon is an easy out-and-back hike in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, within the Austin-Tonopah Ranger District. The route is about 2.4 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 833 feet, and it takes about an hour to complete. The trail starts at roughly 8,600 feet and reaches a high point of about 8,760 feet, with the steepest stretch at the very beginning, where the grade reaches about 18 percent. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically June and September, when typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs around 76°F to 74°F and lows in the low 40s. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the canyon's higher ground run cooler. Several other hikes lie within a short drive. Morrey Peak is about 1.3 miles away, Cold Springs is about 1.4 miles away, and Adt - Nevada - S - Seg 4 is about 1.1 miles away. Fandangos is roughly 4.9 miles off.
