S Bangtail is a cross-country ski route in Montana, about 7 miles from the town of Springhill. It is a short out-and-back, roughly a mile long, with a high point of about 6,160 feet and a low of about 6,060 feet. The climb is moderate, with a total gain of about 220 feet, and the steepest stretch comes early on, around 9% grade. Winter is the natural season for this route. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Bozeman show January highs around 34°F and lows near 15°F, with about nine snow days that month. That station sits roughly 1,250 feet lower than the route, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. Several other ski routes start within a tenth of a mile, including Meadow Loop, Warming Shelter Trail and Going Home. Climbers can find Lower Replica and Wolverine Bowl about 2 miles away, and Battle Ridge Cabin offers a place to stay about 3 miles off.
