Cabin Lake is a mountain biking route in the Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District of Montana's Lolo National Forest, about 2 miles away from the Forest Service's own ranger district boundaries. The ride gains about 1,200 feet from a starting point near 4,800 feet to a high point of about 6,000 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about the 1.3-mile mark, where the grade reaches roughly 29 percent, and the climb is about 1.9 miles long with a total descent of around 200 feet. That makes for a ride with a clear direction and a high point, not a back-and-forth trip. Summer is the most comfortable time to ride. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show July and August highs around 70°F, with lows in the low 50s and only about six wet days a month. Winter is cold, with January highs near 28°F and lows around 19°F. South Fork Four Lakes Creek, a hike, lies just 0.4 miles away, and Cube Iron Mountain and Upper Graves Creek are within about 2 miles. For an overnight, Cougar Peak Lookout is roughly 6 miles off.
