Mud Lake is a hard hike in the Yellowstone Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana, about 5.8 miles long with a one-way elevation gain of 1,246 feet. The trail is an out-and-back, starting at a low point of about 8,514 feet and reaching a high of about 9,115 feet. The route is on natural surface, and horses are allowed. Bikes are not. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. For a longer outing, Pole Gulch lies about 1.8 miles away and Fridley Lake about 2.8 miles. Campers can look to the Fr 3163 East Fork Hyalite Creek 054 campground, roughly 5.6 miles off. Climbers will find Hyalite Canyon about 7.2 miles away.
