Cross Country is a hard hike in the Darby Ranger District of Montana's Bitterroot National Forest, about 16.6 miles long with a one-way elevation gain of 1,701 feet. The trail is natural-surfaced and makes an out-and-back route, starting at a low point of about 5,557 feet and reaching a high of about 7,451 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is part of the national forest system. It is a long, steep outing, so plan for a full day on foot. Several other destinations sit within a few miles. Sawdust Gulch is about 1.4 miles away, and Sleeping Child and Skalkaho Creek are both about 2.4 miles off. Black Bear Campground, about 5.3 miles away, is the closest place to camp.
