Blacktail Lake is an easy hike of about 0.7 miles in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, part of the Yellowstone Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest in Montana. The Forest Service manages the land, and the nearest town is Minnie Rahn Place, about 6.5 miles away. The trail is an out-and-back with a one-way climb of about 150 feet, from a low point of 8,473 feet to a high of 8,727 feet. The route is natural-surface and allows horses, and bikes are not permitted. For more time on foot, Blacktail Creek lies about 1.6 miles away and Canyon Creek about 2.2 miles. Pine Creek campground is roughly 5.6 miles off, and climbers can find 7-11 Crag about 7.4 miles away.
