Shaw Mountain is a short out-and-back hike in Maine's Roaches CE, a land unit managed by a non-governmental organization. The route is about a mile long, with a high point of 1,457 feet and a total elevation gain of 109 feet. The climb is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about 0.4 miles in, and the trail is roughly 0.5 miles from the Shaw Mountain Cutoff, a cross-country ski route. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical July averages from a nearby weather station run to a high of 75°F and a low of 57°F, and September stays mild with highs around 66°F. That station sits about 420 feet lower than the high point, so temperatures on the summit run cooler. The hike takes about half an hour. The closest neighbors are the Shaw Mountain Cutoff and Dr. Wiggles Trail, both cross-country ski routes, and the Hinckley Cove Trail and Shaw Mountain Trail, which are hikes about a mile away.
