Albany Mountain is a hard hike in the Androscoggin Ranger District of Maine's White Mountain National Forest, about 6 miles from the trailhead at Albany Notch. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from a low point of 780 feet to a high of 1,742 feet, with a total gain of 1,985 feet over the course of the trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 2 miles in, where the grade reaches 29 percent. The trail is natural-surface and not accessible. Bikes are allowed, so it works for riders as well as hikers. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Bethel run to highs around 79°F in July, with lows near 57°F. That station sits well below the summit, so temperatures up high run cooler. The hike takes about 3 hours. The trailhead is open year-round, and the surrounding area offers more to explore. Albany Brook is half a mile away, and the Albany Mountian Trail and Miles Notch Trail are both within 3 miles. Hastings Campground, about 8 miles off, is the closest place to camp.
