Custer #1 Campground is a Forest Service campground in the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District of Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest, about a mile above the townsite of Custer. The town was a boom town in the late 1800s, and the Custer Motorway passes through the area. The campground has six sites with picnic tables and fire rings with cooking grills. It also has a vault toilet and can accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet long. The museum in town is open from 9 to 5 Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Stanley show July and August highs around 80°F with lows in the upper 30s, while winter highs stay in the 20s. Nearby, the Custer Interpretive Trail is about 1.8 miles away and the Estes Mtn Trail about 3.3 miles. Bonanza Group Campground is about 3.9 miles off, and the Yankee Fork offers canoeing about 4.2 miles away.
