Back 9 Expressway is a short, easy cross-country ski route in Colorado, about 1.9 miles from the town of Elkdale. The trail is only 0.28 miles long, rising from 8,104 feet to 8,127 feet, with a total elevation gain of 13 feet. That makes it a quick addition to a day on the snow, and the climb is gentle, with the steepest stretch at about 3% grade near the end of the route. Winter is the natural season for this kind of skiing. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Grand Lake put January highs around 26°F with lows near 3°F, while July highs reach about 75°F. The station sits at a similar elevation to the route, so temperatures here run close to those figures. The Back 9 Loop lies about 0.3 miles away, and the Front 9 Loop is roughly 0.7 miles off, giving skiers a way to extend their outing. For time off the snow, the Grand County / Fraser Valley climbing area is about 3.9 miles away, and Sunset Point Campground is about 5.7 miles away for an overnight stay.
