The Grendel is a climbing area in Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Colorado, managed by State Fish and Wildlife. It sits within the park's climbing corridor, and the closest neighbors are Mt. Thorodin and the Second Buttress, both about 0.8 miles away. The Snowshoe Hare Trail is also that close. The area has 15 climbing routes, with 11 sport routes and 4 traditional routes. Grades range from 5.8 up to 5.12b. Among the named routes are Exit Stage Right at 5.8, the trad route Beowoof at 5.9+, and Academic Freedom at 5.12b. Summer is the most comfortable time to climb here. Typical July averages from the nearby Coal Creek Canyon weather station run about 73°F for highs and 48°F for lows, though that station sits roughly 1,200 feet lower than the Grendel, so temperatures at the crag run cooler. Cold Springs Campground is about 4.8 miles away, and South Boulder Creek offers paddling about 4 miles out.
