Flume is a moderate out-and-back hike in Colorado's Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, on the Sulphur Ranger District, about 4.3 miles long with a 190-foot climb from 8,836 feet to 9,035 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is a natural-surface route that allows horses. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring through early fall. Typical averages from the nearby Fraser weather station, which sits about 475 feet lower, run from highs near 62°F in May to around 77°F in July, with July lows near 38°F. Winters are cold, with January highs averaging about 31°F. The trip runs from the Deadhorse Trailhead, and the open season runs from June 1 to November 15. St. Louis Creek Campground is about half a mile away, and the Creekside Trail and Chainsaw trails both lie within about a tenth of a mile. The Fraser River, about 2.6 miles off, offers canoeing.
