Island Campground is a Bureau of Reclamation campground inside Vega State Park in western Colorado, about 0.5 miles from Oak Point Campground and 1 mile from Aspen Grove Campground. It is one of several campgrounds clustered within the park's boundaries, with Early Settlers Campground about 1.2 miles away. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show May highs around 68°F and September highs around 74°F. That station sits roughly 1,200 feet lower than the park, so temperatures at the camp run cooler than the station's figures. The Aspen Nature Trail and Vega Trail both lie about a mile away. Buzzard Creek, a canoeing spot, is about 2.5 miles off, and Leon Creek offers more paddling at roughly 4.3 miles.
