Himes Peak Campground is a Forest Service campground in the Blanco Ranger District of Colorado's White River National Forest, about 21 miles from the town of Yampa. It has 11 campsites and vault toilets, and it sits within the Flat Tops Wilderness. Big Fish Trail #1819 starts right from the campground, making it a base for hiking in the surrounding backcountry. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from the Yampa weather station, which sits a few hundred feet lower, show July highs around 79°F and lows near 46°F, while winter highs stay near freezing. Elk hunting is strong in season, and Rainbow Lake and Big Fish Lake offer good fishing close by. Big Fish, a river fishing spot, is just 0.1 mile away. Boulder Lake and Anderson Reservoir are each about a mile and a quarter off. For more camping, Trappers Lake/Shephards Rim Campground lies roughly 2.8 miles away.
