Scotts Flat Trail is a 9.4-mile out-and-back hike in California, about 1.7 miles from the community of Scotts Flat. The trail rises from a low point of about 3,100 feet to a high of about 3,776 feet, with a total elevation gain of 674 feet. It is a hard hike, and the route is natural-surfaced, so expect a rougher path than a paved or well-maintained trail. The trail is open year-round, and bikes are allowed. That makes it a practical choice for a longer outing, whether on foot or on a mountain bike. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Nevada City weather station show May highs around 71°F and October highs around 71°F, with only a few wet days in each month. That station sits roughly 1,000 feet below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Harmony Trail, a mountain biking route, starts just 0.1 mile away, and Hoot Trail is about 0.7 mile off. Climbers can head to South Yuba River: Edward's Crossing, about 3.8 miles away, and paddlers will find Greenhorn Creek about 4.2 miles away.
