Rubicon is a 16.4-mile out-and-back hike in California's Desolation Wilderness, part of the Pacific Ranger District of Eldorado National Forest. The trail climbs from a low point of 7,106 feet to a high of 8,415 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,339 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is on natural surface, with horses allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Dagget Pass, Nevada, show July highs around 75°F with lows near 49°F and only about two wet days a month. That station sits roughly 1,000 feet below the trail's high point, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. The hike is rated hard. Velma and Schmidell are both within about a mile and a half. Eagle Lake Buttress, a climbing area, is about 3.3 miles away, and Bayview Campground is about 5.3 miles away.
