Shirttail Campground is a Forest Service site in California's Tahoe National Forest, within the American River Ranger District. It's a small, basic campsite, with vault toilets as the only listed facility, and it charges a fee for use. Late spring and early fall tend to be the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 72°F in May and 74°F in October, while July and August average highs near 91°F and lows around 62°F. That station sits about 500 feet lower than the campground, so temperatures at camp run a little cooler. Shirttail Creek campground and the Sugar Pine Trail are both about a tenth of a mile away. Giant Gap campground is roughly 0.4 miles off, and the Sugar Pine Boat Ramp is under a mile away.
