Mosquito Flat Backpacker Campground is a Forest Service walk-in site in the White Mountain Ranger District of Inyo National Forest, about 5.5 miles from the town of Scheelite, California. It is a special one-night-only campground, set up for backpackers who need a place to stay the night before heading out on a trip. It holds 10 single campsites, and the walk in is short. No fees are required to use the site, and the only amenities are vault toilets. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 71°F in July, with lows near 38°F. That station sits well below the campground, so expect temperatures up top to run cooler. Mount Abbot is a hike about 0.1 mile away, and the Starr Wall climbing area is about 0.4 mile off. Rock Creek Lake Campground lies about 1.2 miles away, and Patricia Bowl, another climbing area, is about 2 miles away.
