The Ward hike is a 12.1-mile out-and-back on the Forest Service's land in the Flagstaff Ranger District of Coconino National Forest in Arizona. It starts at the Kelly Trailhead and climbs from about 6,839 feet to about 7,129 feet, with a total elevation gain of 314 feet. That makes it a steady climb over the course of a long outing rather than a sharp rise on a short route. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically May and September. A nearby weather station in Flagstaff records typical average highs around 68°F in May and 74°F in September, while July and August bring more frequent wet days. The Howard hike is less than a mile away, and the East Kelly Canyon and Trailer Park climbing areas are both about a mile and a half off. Pine Flat Campground West lies about 5.3 miles away for those planning an overnight stay.
