Hieroglyphics Trail #101 is a 3-mile out-and-back hike in Arizona's Superstition Wilderness, within the Mesa Ranger District of Tonto National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail rises from about 2,080 feet to about 2,680 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,184 feet over the round trip. The climb is steepest near the start, with a grade of about 11% at 0.24 miles in. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Apache Junction show March highs around 77°F and November highs around 76°F, while July and August average in the mid-100s. That station sits about 600 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. The hike is rated moderate, and the route is closed to bikes and horses. Plan about 1.5 hours for the trip. The Hieroglyphic Trail and Lost Goldmine Trail both lie within about a mile and a half, and the Carney Springs Wall climbing area is about 2.4 miles away. Tortilla Campground, roughly 8 miles off, offers a place to stay overnight.
